According to the reports, West Ham United sent an official to watch Benfica’s 1-0 win at Rio Ave on Sunday. The Hammers have been linked to quite a few players from Benfica in the past year. Two of them were Anderson Talisca and Lisandro Lopez, but, inconveniently, neither of them played in Sunday’s tie.
However, another player who was reportedly wanted by the London club was chosen as the Man of the Match. Record’s front page labels him as “Speedy Jiménez”, as the Mexican hero subbed Kostas Mitroglou at 67 minutes and scored the winner for Benfica.
In August, the Hammers boss Slaven Bilic said: “We are close (to signing Raul Jimenez). But it’s not done yet. Hopefully, it will be done Thursday or Friday. Anyway, he will not make the squad for Sunday.
“It will be good for us to get a player as soon as possible considering that in some positions we need players.”
As he was speaking, it was being reported in Spain that the player had signed for Benfica on loan instead.
Eagles’ defender Victor Lindelof and Rio Ave midfielder Alhassan Wakaso had very good defensive performances and were the only players on the pitch to get a 7 rating from A Bola.
Emissaries from Manchester United, Arsenal, Benfica, Celta, Sporting Gijón, Mallorca and Wisła Kraków also watched the game.
