The Magpies have been linked with Napoli star Dries Mertens ahead of their imminent return to the Premier League.
The summer transfer window opens on 1st July but the rumour mill has started already.
Belgian publication Het Nieuwsblad have linked Napoli striker Dries Mertens with a move to the Premier League this summer. The Belgian star will have plenty of suitors in England but Newcastle is being understood as a probable destination. Mertens arrived at Napoli while Rafa Benitez was in charge of the Naples based club and a re-union looks set on the cards. Napoli will be looking to make a decent amount of transfer money this summer as his contract runs out in 2018.

Dries Mertens has scored 24 goals in all competitions this season including 19 in the Serie A. The 29 year old striker will have to compromise with the absence of Champions League football at St. James’ Park. Also, it remains to be seen whether Newcastle United will be able to splash out the cash needed to acquire his services.
Newcastle are currently sitting on top of the Championship and are on the verge of gaining automatic promotion. Dwight Gayle has chipped in with 21 goals this season but Rafa must be looking to add to the firepower in the summer.
Only time will tell how Benitez prepares to go head to head against the giants of English football next season.
