Marseille winger gets his first ever inclusion in the French squad at the expense of former Newcastle teammate.
Florian Thauvin played just 420 minutes for Newcastle after joining the English club for £15 million from Marseille. The charismatic midfielder failed to make an impact for the toons while ill-fated gaffer Steve McLaren wrote him off. The 24 year old midfielder is playing in his second season running on-loan for Marseille. The left footed winger has scored 10 goals and assisted another 5 this season. He has arguably been Ligue 1’s best midfielder this season despite being labelled as a flop at Newcastle.
“He has scored and scored this season and has more continuity this year. Thauvin has consistency this season and very good stats and has specific qualities for the right-sided position.”, said Deschamps talking about Thauvin inclusion
Florian Thauvin making the French squad. Not good enough for @NUFC though. Never given a chance 😒

It certainly is a bitter pill to swallow for the Magpies who would have wanted to see more of Thauvin as he will be joining Marseille on a permanent switch in the summer.
While this flop has resurrected his career, one player Newcastle sold for £30 million last summer has lost his place in the French squad.
Moussa Sissoko had an amazing Euro 2016 that saw him attract interest from all across Europe. He left Newcastle to join Tottenham Hotspur on an eventful deadline day deal after brutally snubbing Everton. Sissoko is yet to score in Spurs colors and has struggled for minutes on the pitch. He certainly has to step up and get more minutes under his belt at White Hart Lane if he wants to return to the the French squad.
“I am not questioning his qualities, quite the opposite, but he is not playing enough recently,” Deschamps said of Sissoko.
