Huge blow as club blocks move for Conte’s summer transfer target

The Blues’ desire to strengthen the rearguard continues to meet a brick wall after A.C Milan rejected the pensioners’ bid for Italy, under-21 central back, Alessio Romagnol.

As per Goal, the Serie A outfit turned down an offer in excess of €35 million for the young defender as they have no plans to let go of him.

Romagnol arrived at the San Siro for £21million last summer and has quickly settled into a highly valued member of the playing staff; earning comparisons with Italian and club legend Alessandro Nesta due to his playing and defensive style.

A lack of depth in the defence department has forced Conte into prioritizing a centre-back as one of his key summer targets, and that has seen the club go after the likes of Bonucci and Kalidou Koulibaly as a result.

The latter was deemed a more realistic option after Juventus held on to the Italian defensive maestro. However, a move for the Napoli defender fell through and Milan’s Romagnol became the next on the preference list.

Chelsea are yet to keep a clean sheet in the 2 league games played thus far, and with Zouma still on the injury sidelines since last season, the need for reinforcements cannot be overemphasized.

The club’s search for a quality defender will continue and Conte will hope to be able to wrap such deal up before the summer transfer window closes on September 1.
