A 30-day suspension has been handed to Liverpool ace defender, Mamadou Sakho. A final decision will be made by UEFA within a month, and a ban, between 6 and 24 months could be handed to him for the failed drug test. With that being a reality, life at the Reds’ defence must go on, and after considering another central back option in Belgium international and Barcelona player, Thomas Vermaelen, a formal bid has been made, as per The Sun.
For the 30-year-old former Arsenal skipper, Liverpool want to dish out £7.5 million, and a move could be on the cards when the Summer transfer window opens. Vermaelen arrived Camp Nou in 2014 after a successful EPL career with the Gunners, but he is yet to hold down a starting place in the Barcelona defence, no thanks to incessant injuries. He is down the pecking orders as far as selection process goes, and the Belgian is still keen for regular action. A return to the EPL could excite him, as the La Liga mission obviously hit the rocks.
Despite having a handful of options to fill Sakho’s shoes, adding a veteran in Vermaelen is considerable. His EPL experience come handy, and in a new season that would see Liverpool playing as many as 4 competitions, rotation and resting of players come to the fore. Barcelona will be more than willing to sell the former Belgium skipper who still has 3 years left on his current contract. A 10 La Liga-game player doesn’t look indispensable. Thomas Vermaelen’s leadership abilities no doubt will come useful to the Liverpool team that is bound to be without a leadership figure in Sakho for a while.
