Chelsea have held talks with Roma over Radja Nainggolan – and been quoted a price of £40m.
Midfielder Nainggolan is one of new Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte’s priority transfer targets.
But, Premier League champions have baulked at Roma’s opening asking price for the Belgian.
Premier League champions are believed to consider Roma’s valuation too high especially as he will be 28 by the start of next season.
Guus Hiddink’s side are believed to have taken a step back from negotiations over Nainggolan for now.
And they are not short of alternative targets to assess with Conte hoping to bring up to two new central midfielders to Stamford Bridge.
Bayern Munich star Arturo Vidal, Juventus’s Paul Pogba, who worked under Conte in Turin, and another Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanic are also under consideration.
Leicester City star N’Golo Kante has also caught Chelsea’s eye.
Conte will have talks with John Terry over his Chelsea future – but the veteran defender still expects to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
The 35-year-old Terry fears the club have already made up their minds to go in a “different direction” and he does not think he will be offered a new contract when his deal expires in the summer.
