After last performance, Louis van Gaal may stay at Old Trafford

Reportedly, Manchester United players now expect Dutch manager Louis Van Gaal to stay at least until the end of the season, after several good performances in Europa League and EPL.

Van Gaal has been under pressure throughout the season, and particularly so since December, with an unemployed Jose Mourinho waiting stage left and reportedly desirous of the former Ajax, Bayern Munich and Barcelona manager’s job.

Mourinho believes he has a “gentleman’s agreement” to take over the United job in the summer, and last week, his former director at Inter Milan, Bedy Moratti, let slip that the Portuguese was “going to Manchester.”

But the Manchester Evening News reported that “senior United players” now believe Van Gaal will not depart before the end of this campaign, and may even see out a contract that lasts until the end of the 2016-17 season.

However, United’s results have improved in the past two weeks, with progress in the UEFA Europa League and a hugely impressive display against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday spearheaded by teenage sensation Marcus Rashford, one of a number of young players Van Gaal has helped to bring through during his two seasons in Manchester.

Perhaps more importantly, United has begun to play more attacking football, after Van Gaal faced boos and jeers from the Old Trafford crowd earlier in the season for a perceived negative style of play.
